Experts and Scholars Discussed Mathematics and Its Applications


     From Nankai University News Network (Reporter: Lan Fang; Photographer: Zong Qiqi): On June 30, the Mathematics Interdisciplinary Science Centre of Nankai University was inaugurated. Based on the “four orientations”, the centre will exploit its traditional mathematics advantages of Nankai University, and focus on basic research in mathematics and essential questions in interdisciplinary fields such as mathematics and data information, artificial intelligence, biomedicine, and financial actuarial sciences, as well as the cross-integration of applications and mechanisms, to serve national significant strategies and primary needs.


    Cao Xuetao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Nankai University, Xu Jingjun, executive vice president of Nankai University, Ge Molin and Zhang Weiping, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chern Institute of Mathematics of Nankai University, Bai Chengming, director of the Mathematics Interdisciplinary Science Centre of Nankai University, and Ding Longyun, executive deputy director of the Mathematics Interdisciplinary Science Centre of Nankai University unveiled the centre together. Long Yiming, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chern Institute of Mathematics of Nankai University, attended the inauguration ceremony online.


   

    Cao Xuetao said in his speech that the founding of the centre was the cohesion of the wisdom of experts and scholars from multiple disciplines at Nankai University, with mathematics as the main part. It is another important result of the interdisciplinary science centre construction during Nankai University’s implementation of the “4211 Excellent Nankai Action Scheme”, and the university will fully support the construction and development of the centre.

 

    Cao Xuetao wished that the centre would aim at significant national needs and address major scientific problems, explore the potential for applying mathematics in scientific and technological progress, technological breakthrough and industrial upgrading, and achieve cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary integration and collaboration, to allow leading and pioneering achievements to spring up in Nankai University.

 

    Ge Molin, Long Yiming, and Zhang Weiping thanked the university for its strong support for the development of mathematical sciences in their speech. They expressed their hope that the centre would shoulder its responsibilities in academic research, discipline construction and talent training, keep expanding the cross-integration of mathematics and other disciplines, broaden the innovative research fields in basic mathematics and applied mathematics, produce world-class scientific research results, and commit to the development of China’s mathematics and national and regional economic and social development.


 

    According to the report, the centre will focus on international frontiers and national significant needs. Led by Nankai University’s predominant research in mathematics, the centre will carry out scientific research in “Core Questions in Basic Research”, “Information Theory Coding Cryptography, Image Processing, and Artificial Intelligence”, “Protein Function Prediction and Single Cell Data Analysis” and “Mathematical Finance and Actuarial Studies”, and strive to achieve some original and influential landmark results, to theoretically and technically support to make a breakthrough in cutting-edge research and critical technologies in the fields of image processing, artificial intelligence, information security, actuarial science and mathematical finance, protein function prediction, etc.; meanwhile, the centre will gather and train a group of well-known scientific talents in cutting-edge cross-disciplinary fields, and establish a new interdisciplinary scientific research organization system, to become a leading platform for interdisciplinary research in mathematics and applications.

 

    At the “Mathematics and Its Applications Seminar” following the ceremony, Wang Su, professor of the School of Mathematical Sciences, Wang Zhaojun, professor of the School of Statistics and Data Science, Sun Wenchang, professor of the School of Mathematical Sciences of Nankai University, and Han Deren, professor of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Beihang University, respectively lectured on “Description of Combination Theory”, “Activation Discovery with FDR Control: Application to fMRI Data”, “Sampling and Reconstruction of Signals”, “Absolute Value Equations and Optimization”. Zhou Qi, professor of the Chern Institute of Mathematics of Nankai University, Li Qiongling, distinguished researcher, Shi Yongtang, professor of the Combinatorial Mathematics Centre, and Bai Lihua, Guang Xuan and Wu Chunlin, professor of the School of Mathematical Sciences, delivered intriguing reports on “Phase Transition and Mobility Edge”, “Nilpotent Higgs Bundles and the Hodge Metric on the Calabi-Yau Moduli”, “Metric Analysis and Application in Network Science” “Optimal Investment and Divided under Renewal Risk Model”, “Information Theory for Function Computation” and “On Nonconvex Regularized Models for Image and Surface Restoration Problems” respectively.
