From Nankai University News Network (Correspondent: Li Jianxin): On the morning of April 26, Professor Zhuang Zhida, academician of the Singapore National Academy of Science, director of the Institute for Mathematical Sciences of the National University of Singapore, and former executive vice president of the National University of Singapore, attended the “Lecture on Centennial Nankai University” and delivered an academic report on “Hilbert’s Program and Reverse Mathematics”.

Academician Zhuang Zhida has profound accomplishments in mathematical logic. He introduced the concept of reverse mathematics by proposing the second mathematical problem presented by Hilbert among the 23 at the Second International Congress of Mathematicians held in Paris in 1900. Reverse mathematics is a branch developed in the 1980s closely related to Hilbert’s program, the correlation between which was discussed in Academician Zhuang’s report. The School of Mathematical Sciences faculty and students immersed themselves in the lecture and exchanged ideas with Academician Zhuang.

The head of the School of Mathematical Sciences presented Academician Zhuang with the honorary medal of “Centennial Nankai University Lecturer” before the lecture. Academician Zhuang also had a discussion with the administration of the School of Mathematical Sciences after the speech, where he got a picture of international exchanges of teachers and students, and reached a preliminary consensus with the administration on promoting joint training of mathematics talents and international exchanges between the two universities.
